At around 7 AM GMT+2 on Saturday, May 26th, a large police contingent surrounded the building complex of the former Chatzikosta Hospital, located on central Papandreou Avenue in the city of Ioannina. This complex, apart from being a temporary home for migrants and refugees, is also were the Antiviosi squat is located.
Various anti-riot squads, including some from other cities, as well as fire fighter units and municipal utility workers sealed the entrances to the complex under the orders of mayor Filippas Filios, the governor of the region of Epirus Alexandros Kachrimanis, the director of Chatzikosta Hospital Fotis Vavvas, and in the presence of a prosecutor.
The climate preceding the repression was prepared by the local far-right newspaper Proinos Logos and the television station TV1, which systematically promote the neo-Nazi and xenophobic discourse of Golden Dawn candidate Christos Pappas. Under the slogan of cleaning the “health bomb”—supposedly presented by the migrants—the local authorities, the prosecution authorities, cops, neo-Nazis, and the bastard snitches of the local media have launched a veritable manhunt against undocumented migrants. This repression wave in Ioannina comes a few days after the pogroms and neo-Nazi riots in the Peiraiki–Patraiki ex-factory in the city of Patras.
As reported live by the rebel Autonomous Radio of Ioannina, there have thus far been two detentions and searches of comrades (short after, police let them go at the spot), while an antifascist demonstration in support of the migrants has been taking place in front of the City Hall of Ioannina since 10:00. At the same time, other groups of comrades are remaining in the Antiviosi squat, ready to resist any attempt by the cops to attack it.
While the city council workers continue to seal the entrances to the former hospital, other forces of repression moved in the direction of the old military prisons, located on Gennimata Avenue, looking for undocumented migrants who may have sought refuge there because, thus far, the cops have not been able to arrest anyone. This complex was supposed to be evacuated and sealed off as well, but we still wait for confirmation (there are neither police squads, nor migrants there as of 13:00).
Despite the authorities’ “cleansing” operation, amidst a ruthless campaign ahead of June 17th repeat elections, no migrant was caught inside the aforementioned buildings, while our comrades and other antifascist supporters still safeguard the Antiviosi squat. Nevertheless, a total of 30 migrants (apparently, with and without papers) have been detained across the city, even with police raids in migrants’ residences.

Ioánnina, Grecia: Operación de “limpieza” contra migrantes
Cerca las 7 de la mañana del sábado, 26 de mayo, masivas fuerzas policiales rodearon el complejo de edificios del antiguo hospital Chatzikosta, ubicado en la avenida central Papandreou de la ciudad de Ioánnina. En dicho complejo, aparte de lugar de permanencia temporal de migrantes y refugiadxs, se sitúa también la okupa Antiviosi.Varios escuadrones de antidisturbios, unos venidos de otras ciudades, equipos de bomberos y operarios de los servicios técnicos de la municipalidad sellaron las entradas del complejo bajo las órdenes del alcalde Filippas Filios, del prefecto de la región de Epiro, llamado Alexandros Kachrimanis, del director del hospital Chatzikosta, Fotis Vavvas, y con la presencia de fiscal.
El clima precedente de la operación represiva fue preparado por el periódico local de extrema derecha Proinos Logos y el canal de televisión TV1, que promueven sistemáticamente el discurso neonazi y xenófobo del candidato de Amanecer Dorado, Christos Pappas. Bajo el eslogan de la limpieza de la “bomba higiénica”–que supuestamente constituyen lxs migrantes– las autoridades locales, la fiscalía, los maderos, los neonazis y los bastardos chivatos de los medios locales han comenzado una verdadera caza humana contra lxs sin papeles. Esta ola represiva en la ciudad de Ioannina viene unos días después de los pogroms contra lxs migrantes y los disturbios neonazis en la antígua fabrica de Peiraiki–Patraiki en la ciudad de Patras.
Como contra-informa al vivo la combativa Radio Autónoma de Ioánnina, hasta ahora hay por lo menos dos retenciones y registros de compas, mientras que desde las 10:00 horas se está llevando a cabo una concentración antifascista y de apoyo a lxs migrantes frente a la Prefectura. Al mismo tiempo otros grupos de compas permanecen en la okupa Antiviosi, listxs para resistir a cualquier intento de ataque de los maderos.
Mientras los operarios de la municipalidad continúan sellando las entradas del antiguo hospital, otras fuerzas represivas se dirigen hacia el antiguo campamento militar, ubicado en la avenida Makariou, en búsqueda de migrantes indocumentados que podrían haber encontrado refugio allá, dado que hasta ahora los maderos no han conseguido detener a nadie. Se supone que este complejo será evacuado y sellado también (a las 13:00, GMT+2, no hay ni escuadrones de la policía ni migrantes).
A pesar de la operación de “limpieza” de las autoridades, en medio de una despiadada campaña en vistas a la repetición de las elecciones el 17 de junio, ningún(a) migrante ha sido atrapadx en los edificios arriba mencionados, mientras lxs compas y otrxs solidarixs antifascistas siguen protegiendo la okupa Antiviosi. Sin embargo, un total de 30 migrantes (por lo visto, con y sin papeles) han sido detenidxs en varios puntos de la ciudad, incluso en asaltos policiales a sus residencias.
